WASHINGTON – The 2012 National Safe Boating Week (NSBW) campaign officially begins this Saturday, May 19 and runs through Friday, May 25 – the start of Memorial Day Weekend and traditional start to the summer boating season.

Since its inception, NSBW represents an ideal opportunity for the Coast Guard Auxiliary to partner with other like-minded organizations to help make America’s waterways safer by promoting recreations boating safety.

“Recreation boating safety remains the primary goal for our organization,” according to James E. Vass, Jr., National Commodore of the  Auxiliary. “I encourage every  Auxiliary unit to maximize National Safe Boating Week opportunities to promote safety on the water.".

LOCAL COAST GUARD AUXILIARY CELEBRATES 70 YEARS OF SERVICE

FAIRHAVEN, Conn. - On May 14, 1942, the "New Bedford Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla 1N-0605" was formed by a small group of local boating enthusiasts. Records from the earliest days tell us there were 17 charter members.

The flotilla was originally established in New Bedford and thus the name "New Bedford" flotilla 1N-0605. The numbers signify that it was the fifth flotilla in division 6 of the 1st Coast Guard District. The flotilla was made up of dedicated boaters who seized every opportunity to better themselves.

MOTHER-DAUGHTER SHARE DEEP COMMITMENT TO SERVICE

VENICE, Fla. - Barbara Szymanski and her mother Dorothy Kurtz share a deep commitment to the Coast Guard. "My mother has always been a shining example for me," said Szymanski, area director of nursing for Matrix Home Care. "She has inspired me throughout my career." .

Back in 1942, Kurtz joined in the women's reserve of the Coast Guard in World War II. Under the leadership of Captain Dorothy Stratton, the reserve became known as SPARs, a combination of the Coast Guard motto, "Semper Paratus" and its English translation, "Always Ready."

Today, Kurtz is one of the last remaining original Coast Guard SPARS in Southwest Florida, while Szymanski is a volunteer staff officer of the Coast Guard Auxiliary unit Flotilla 92 in Northport. "My mother and I both support the military and believe in its importance to our country," Szymanski said.
